The WH1000XM5s block a jet engine's steady rumble but not a squealing braking system or your seatmate's animated conversations. Passive isolation is the best option.
If you'd like to block out even more noise, there are various options available. You can adjust the EQ within the headphones using the Headphones Connect app or a third-party equalizer, and you can also use the programmable button on the left earcup to select three "favorite" noise cancellation levels. There are ten total ANC control levels all and you can turn them on or off with the push of the button.
